Without doubt one of the firm favourites on the fairground is he carousel. While they may lack the technology of some newer rides, there is something relaxing and enjoyable about sitting on a horse, in a carriage or on any of their variations, spinning gently to music.
The carousel originated with a game played by Arabian and Turkish horsemen way back in the 12th century. They would toss a ball to each other while riding in a circle. The French were the ones to take the idea and create a ride from it, using legless wooden horses with a wooden central pole. People sitting on the horses would practise games such as jousting, grabbing a steel ring from a dispenser hanging above the horses.
By the late 1700s, this training ride had become a fun ride and the invention of steam powered ‘roundabouts’ in Bolton in 1861 by Thomas Bradshaw saw the development into the ride we recognise today. American craftsmen were the ones to really change the carousel to the ride we know today, including adding zoo animals and mythical creatures to the ride.
