Funfair Hire Livingston
Not many people have heard of Frederick Savage but for kids all around the world, he performed a great service – he invented a steam engine that operated the first funfair rides and dispensed with the limitations of manpower. This agricultural engineer came up with the idea of running fairground rides by steam power and that has evolved into the rides that we know today.
Back in the 1860s, the ride on offer in the Midsummer Fair was the merry go round. By the 1890s, the Gallopers ride came along and this travelled to the US and became known as the Carousel. The first Ferris Wheel appeared in the Chicago World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893 and was created by one George Washington Gale Ferris, a bridge architect by day who turned his hand to creating funfair rides.
Another mainstay of many funfairs and other attractions around the world is the locomotive. The creation of these rides saw the changes in funfair towards the type of attraction we recognise today. With steam power and carts to travel around the site, the locomotive quickly became a favourite with the kids. Today the same rides are powered by electricity and are used in thousands of different ways.
But being a distance from a theme park can mean that your kids don’t see these kids too often. The good news is now there is fairground ride hire in Livingston and the surrounding area through Event Catering Scotland. No matter the size of the venue, they will have a ride that will work and something for all ages.
