No-one knows for certain who invented the idea of a funfair or where the first one was held. As far back as Roman times, there was an event that resembled a funfair with stalls and games and even rides of a sort. Jump forward to the Middle Ages and chartered fairs began. From 1200 to 1400, these were gatherings of people from different countries selling their products and entertainers would join in.
By the 18th century, the entertainment element of the chartered fair has taken over prominence and there was plenty to keep visitors amused. The first steam engine that operated a funfair ride was credited by Frederick Savage, an English agricultural engineer who came up with a way to run rides without needing manpower. The first prominent steam powered ride opened in the Halifax Midsummer Fair in 1863.
