But what are bumper boats? They are much like the idea of bumper cars only with the added element of water. The boats are small and round with a large inner tube around them that acts as the bumper. Riders sit in them and use the controls to patrol around the pool either aiming for or avoiding other boats. Because they are on water, the impact is less intense than with bumper cars, making it less likely anyone gets hurt and more suitable for younger kids.
The idea of bumper boats first came about back in the 1970s when an amusement ride manufacturer called Arrow Development Company came up with the idea. Their boats were limited to a speed of four miles per hour and featured a circular shock absorber to protect the riders.
Modern bumper boats have advanced but not changed too much from those original ideas. They are still softer when hitting another vehicle than bumper cars and mean they are an ideal option for a funfair with lots of small kids involved.
